A man and woman walking at Rosie’s Dog Beach found five cloth parcels, at least two of which contained dead birds, floating near the shoreline Saturday moing.

Ken Barry, a 56-year-old South Bay resident, said he and his wife Patti were walking their dog around 11 a.m. when he spotted five objects floating in the water. He thought it was odd and decided to pull one of them to shore and investigate.

“It was this heavy, blue table cloth,” Barry said. “They were tied up.”

He untied the cloth and was shocked by what he saw.

“At first I thought it was a head,” Barry said. “It was brown and looked hairy. Then I realized they were feathers. It was just really weird. There was a piece of a coconut in there, just random stuff.”

After opening the first parcel, he decided to pull the others to shore. He didn’t open them, but saw a bird’s wing sticking out of one of the unopened parcels.

Barry called 911 and a dispatcher coected him with an animal control officer who said crews were busy but that they would send someone to pick up the birds.

For Barry, the incident was strange and upsetting. He hoped the parcels were simply trash someone threw off the ship.

“The biggest conce is there’s a lot of dogs,” he said. “I had to keep shooing them away.”

He was also fearful that curious children could touch the birds.

Information confirming whether animal control officers had picked up the birds was not available Saturday afteoon.
