Stars come out for Community Hospital Long Beach Foundation's 'Night at the Movies'

Local stars were out in full costume, walking the red carpet, being interviewed and photographed, with some receiving the coveted Fillmore Awards at the Hyatt Regency on May 20.

Some 250 supporters celebrated a wonderful, colorful, fantastic evening with delicious food and lots of laughs! The L.A. Guys – Bobby Herbeck (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”), David Ruprecht (“Supermarket Sweep”) Roberts Hays (“Airplane!”) and Patrick Wayne (John Wayne’s son) – gave a spoof on dialogue for clips of “Casablanca” and “Stagecoach.”

The “Night at the Movies” event raised $100,000 for the Community Hospital Long Beach Foundation.

The novel idea of awarding prizes for costumes and table décor of famous movies made for great fun throughout the evening. Master of ceremonies Jim Gray took the stage in a graduation robe, representative of the movie “The Graduate.” He brought the judges to the stage, where he dubbed Mari Hooper as Mrs. Robinson, despite her pose as Judge Judy. Her judge cohorts were Bruce Macrae and John Morris. They were spotted moving through the highly decorated tables eliciting high-dollar bribes that came with the promise to award each one the coveted prizes. The total in bribes, or as the judges were heard to call them, “donations,” amounted to just under $2,000.

Wiers of the coveted Fillmore Awards (named for founder Fillmore Condit) were: Most Original Table, by the Convention & Visitors Bureau for “Tombstone;” Best Movie Themed Table, to Community Hospital Long Beach for “MASH,” Best Costumed Table went to P2S Engineering for “Moulin Rouge;” Best Picture was won by Dick and Mya Wigod’s “The Teahouse of the August Moon;” and the People’s Choice Award went to the Port of Long Beach for “Steel Magnolias.”

Auctioneer Don Knabe awarded the wiers of celebrity live auction items to Bob Redaelli, who got a framed and signed “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” poster from writer and producer Bobby Herbeck; Kevin Peterson of P2S Engineering had the high bid for the Behind the Scenes Filming in Long Beach with lunch or dier at Nick’s on 2nd; Vicki Anderson will be having fun at a DreamWorks Studio tour and lunch in the commissary; Suzae Nosworthy won lunch with Bo Derek and John Corbett plus a two-day stay at the Mirabelle I in Solvang.

Other costumed tables included a “Harry Potter” table by Bel Vista Healthcare; Jerry Hughes and Nancy Gills-Hughes did “MASH;” Las Damas de la Plaza were very fuy as “Sister Act;” David and Suzae Nosworthy created two tables of “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes;” “Grease” was popular by both Kevin and Jeifer Peterson and Windes; “Saturday Night Fever” was done by SCAN Health Plan; “The Godfather” was represented by South Coast Shingle Co. and Linda Taylor’s table was patteed on “The Great Gatsby.”

“Reach for the Stars”

The American Cancer Society and the Long Beach Cancer League celebrated its 41st aual fundraising gala on June 4 at the Hotel Maya.

The Long Beach League, a fundraising auxiliary of the ACS, honored a host of Stars, recognizing their stories and roles in the fight against cancer. Over $226,000 was raised to support the society’s life-saving mission. Over the years the Long Beach Cancer League has raised more than $11 million for the cause.

In introducing the league’s 2016 Stars, co-chairs Loren Miner, Sofia Riley, and Sheryl Stewart remarked that the honorees “have made significant contributions to furthering the work of ACS and in helping to ensure that the universal goal of finding a cure is achieved in our lifetime.”

An especially moving moment came when one of the evening’s Stars, young cancer survivor Emily Magilnick, shared her cancer story with the 300-plus guests in attendance.

Women Who Make a Difference Awards

On May 7, a crowd of 260 guests attended a champagne brunch at The Reef for the Soroptimist Inteational of Long Beach’s 33rd Aual Women Who Make a Difference Awards.

The event, which raised $13,000, honors women in the community who use their influence to improve the lives of women and who have distinguished themselves in their profession and in the community.

This year’s honorees included wiers in six Women of Distinction categories and an organization that supports programs for women: AbilityFirst provides job training and employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Women of Distinction Honorees were: Barbara Sullivan-George, Margaret Huebner, Michele Dobson, Naomi Rainey-Pierson, Jill Baker, Melanie Werts, Diane Spiegel.
