Boy, 17, loses hand in Central Long Beach fireworks accident

A 17-year-old boy lost his right hand in a Central Long Beach fireworks accident Monday night, authorities said.

Firefighters were dispatched at 10:11 p.m. Monday to the area of 17th Street and Lemon Avenue, said Brian Fisk, a Long Beach Fire Department spokesman. They arrived one minute later and found the teen who had portions of his right hand missing.

The firework exploded in the teen’s hand, but further information on specifically what happened was not immediately available.

Firefighters transported the teen to an area trauma hospital at 10:22 p.m. in stable condition, Fisk said.

It was not clear as of Tuesday afteoon whether Long Beach police were also investigating the incident.

The Long Beach accident is the second time within days that a person in the area has been seriously injured by fireworks. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating an explosion that left a 9-year-old girl seriously injured in Compton July 2.

The girl lost her left hand and fingers on her right hand in the explosion, and received blast injuries to her face likely caused by illegal fireworks or explosives, Sheriff’s said.
