Find out how many pet dogs ran away on July 4 in Long Beach

Long Beach’s animal shelter was briefly at capacity Sunday and Monday after it took in close to three dozen dogs, many of whom ran away from their homes after being spooked by fireworks.

Ted Stevens, Long Beach Animal Care Services manager, said his staff and volunteers opened the shelter Tuesday and that many residents came by to pick up their dogs.

The shelter has 100 dog keels and can house up to about 150 dogs, Stevens said. Each keel can fit either one large dog, or two or three smaller dogs.

Staff took in 31 lost dogs this July 3-4 compared to 24 dogs on the same days last year, he said.
