Long Beach intersection blocked after car stops after chase

A motorist apparently surrendered to Long Beach police after a short police chase that led to a standoff in North Long Beach.

The man gave himself up shortly about 7:30 p.m., based on information that could be heard broadcast over a police scaer. Confirmation of his arrest was not immediately available from the Long Beach Police Department.

Long Beach SWAT officers entered into negotiations with the man after he barricaded himself inside a vehicle near the intersection of Artesia Boulevard and Downey Avenue.

The standoff followed a police chase that began about 5 p.m. Friday when Long Beach patrol officers encountered a vehicle that had been involved in a pursuit following an incident of reckless driving about 4:30 p.m., Long Beach police Sgt. James Richardson said in an email.

The officers approached the vehicle with the intention of calling in a tow truck to impound it, and the driver attempted to escape police. The officers gave chase and the vehicle broke down near the Artesia Boulevard and Downey Avenue intersection.

It was not known whether the man had a weapon.

Several police cars blocked the Artesia Boulevard and Downey Avenue intersection before the standoff was resolved.
