Sage fire near Santa Clarita 20% contained, evacuations lifted

The Sage fire near Santa Clarita was 20 percent contained as of 8:30 a.m. Sunday and had bued more than 1,100 acres, according to Los Angeles County fire officials.

Residents who had evacuated from 700 homes in the Stevenson Ranch area were allowed to retu home Saturday night, according to L.A. County sheriff’s officials.

No homes were being threatened as of Sunday moing, according to Los Angeles County fire officials said.

The fire was reported at about 12:05 p.m. Saturday in the 24900 block of Old Road near Calgrove Boulevard in unincorporated Los Angeles County, said Los Angeles County Supervising Fire Dispatcher Robert Diaz.

As of Saturday night, more than 1,200 persoel from various fire agencies battling the wildfire, including Los Angeles County Fire Department, CAL Fire, Ventura County Fire, and Los Angeles City Fire, said Inspector Gustavo Medina.

One inmate firefighter and a firefighter from an unidentified agency sustained minor injuries Saturday and were taken to the hospital, Medina said.

Firefighters had to contend with a trifecta of winds, steep terrain as well as heavy brush, which complicated fire fighting efforts, he said.

“We want to make that containment line all the way around today but we’ll see what Mother Nature has in store for us,” Medina said. “We can’t control the winds, so hopefully, they are in our favor.”

Temporary evacuations included those in the Stevenson Ranch area of Santa Clarita who live on nor near Autumn Place, Magnolia Road, Shady Glen Court, Oakridge Road, Brighton Place and Moing Mist Drive, sheriff’s officials said in a statement.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation Sunday, Medina said.
