POMONA >> A homeless woman who police say gave birth and then abandoned her baby in a Subway restroom in West Covina has been charged with child abuse, authorities aounced Monday.

Mary Grace Trinidad, 37, was expected to appear at Pomona Superior Court for an arraignment this afteoon. She was arrested by West Covina police after she gave birth in the restroom of the Subway at 2540 S. Azusa Ave. on Feb. 15. A customer and employees discovered the infant who was alive and still attached to his umbilical cord. An employee called 911.

Police found Trinidad behind the Pep Boys Auto Parts & Service shop which is located in the same strip mall. She left a trail of blood.

Trinidad was accused of harming a child before.

She pleaded no contest on July 3, 2013 to a misdemeanor count of cruelty to a child by inflicting injury and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and four years of probation, according to Sarah Ardalani, spokeswoman for the District Attoey’s Office.

Ardalani said a protective order was issued.

She didn’t have details of the July 1, 2013 incident which resulted in the misdemeanor charge.
