Man arrested in tagging of Vietnam vets wall in Venice; 3 others sought

A man who allegedly admitted tagging the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Venice before Memorial Day, an act that outraged veterans across the region, has been arrested, sheriff’s officials aounced Thursday.

Angel Castro, 24, was taken into custody Wednesday afteoon without incident in the Exposition Park area of Los Angeles, said Ramon Montenegro of the sheriff’s Transit Policing Division.

“Suspect Castro admitted to his role in the vandalism of the Veterans Memorial Wall,” Montenegro said.

He was booked at the Century sheriff’s station on suspicion of felony vandalism, then moved to county jail, where he’s being held on $95,000 bail pending arraignment Friday, according to sheriff’s inmate records.

The exact date that the memorial wall at Pacific Avenue and Sunset Court was defaced is unclear, but it is believed the vandalism occurred the week before Memorial Day on May 30, Montenegro said. He said Castro told detectives he didn’t remember the exact date the wall of the vacant bus garage was tagged.

At the time, stued civic leaders and veterans condemned the vandalism across the mural on Pacific Avenue.

Castro allegedly uses the moniker Liter, which was one of the four monikers scrawled at the scene, Montenegro said.

The Sheriff’s Department asked anyone with information about the three others — Noner, Pheb and Snake — to call Transit Policing Division detectives at 888-950-SAFE (7233).
