Los Angeles County police agencies 'vigilant' in wake of Baton Rouge shootings

Los Angeles-area police agencies expressed sorrow over the fatal shootings of several police officers in Baton Rouge Sunday moing — the second mass shooting targeting officers this month — and said they were remaining vigilant.

“We’re aware of the incident (in Baton Rouge) obviously and monitoring it,” Los Angeles Police Department Officer Mike Lopez, a spokesman, said Sunday moing. “It’s a sad day for law enforcement families.”

Shortly before 9 a.m., several on-duty officers were shot in Louisiana’s capital less than a mile from police headquarters. Three officers were reportedly killed and three others wounded. One suspect was reportedly dead while two others were believed to be still at large, a spokeswoman for the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Guillermina Saldana said Sunday moing that everyone was “remaining vigilant and aware of our surroundings.”

“Nothing has been said about anything being tactically different in our stations or anything like that,” the sheriff’s spokeswoman added. “Right now, it’s just remaining vigilant.”

Following the killing of 5 police officers in Dallas on July 7, Sheriff Jim McDoell instructed deputies to double up in their patrol cars for at least one day following that incident, she said.

“We don’t know about (the Baton Rouge incident) yet; it’s too fresh,” Saldana said.
