Coroner identifies motorcyclist killed Saturday night in Long Beach

A 28-year-old Lakewood man riding a motorcycle was killed after broadsiding a car trying to get out of the way of a fire engine that was responding to an unrelated collision, police said.

The man killed in the Saturday night collision was identified Monday as Anthony Champion, according to Ed Winter, spokesman for the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office. His cause of death is pending.

Police said a fire engine with its lights and siren on was traveling south on Santiago Avenue at about 7 p.m., near Recreation Park, in response to an injury collision involving two vehicles.

A 2013 Volvo S60 driven by a 36-year-old Beverly Hills resident was traveling west on 7th Street and was stopped in the left-hand tu lane, police said.

“The traffic control light had cycled to yellow and the driver, who observed eastbound traffic stopping for the light, began to tu to move out of the way for the fire engine when the motorcycle broadsided the vehicle,” police said in a written statement.

The motorcyclist, who was riding a 2003 Triumph Boeville, was found unconscious in the middle of the intersection. Fire paramedics immediately transported the man to St. Mary Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.
