Long Beach police arrest man accused of killing former Millikan High athlete

Authorities have filed a murder charge against a man accused of shooting a former Millikan High School track athlete to death in June 2015.

The Los Angeles County District Attoey’s Office has charged Tremaine Lewis, 24, of Long Beach with murder and an enhancement alleging the criminal use of a firearm, according to Long Beach police.

Lewis is accused of fatally shooting Alicia Faith Todd, 21, of Signal Hill, whose body was discovered shortly after 1 a.m. June 24 in an alley behind the 1100 block of East 21st Street. Police arrested Lewis on Thursday.

In the courtroom

Lewis appeared at Long Beach Superior Court on Monday afteoon, but he did not enter a plea. Judge Tomson T. Ong allowed Lewis to postpone his arraignment until March 7 and set bail at $2 million.

A family member of Lewis who viewed the proceedings in court declined to comment.

A group of Todd’s relatives also attended court and the victim’s sister, Patricia Todd, said she and other family members want justice to be served and for Alicia Todd to be remembered as being both sweet and determined.

At the time of her death, Alicia Todd was enrolled at Long Beach City College aspiring to a career in social work, her sister said.

“She had a very bright future,” Patricia Todd said.

Police work

Officers and detectives who initiated the investigation encountered no witnesses and few clues at the crime scene, according to a police department statement. Detectives interviewed Todd’s relatives and friends in order to reconstruct the events of her final days and leaed that she and Lewis had what the department termed a “domestic relationship” at the time of the killing.

Investigators also determined Lewis and Todd were together on the night she died, according to police.

Sgt. Brad Johnson said in an email that police are not releasing information related to a possible motive for the crime.

The detectives’ investigation remains open. Outside the courtroom, Patricia Todd implored anyone who may know something about the crime to be forthcoming with whatever information they possess.

“As her older sister, I still do want people to come forward, if they do know anything else, please,” she said. “Continue to pray for us.”
