Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to speak at Long Beach conference for county leaders

Basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will headline a conference this weekend in Long Beach where county leaders from across the country will gather for four days of inspirational talks and policy discussions.

Abdul Jabbar, a six-time NBA champion, is scheduled to deliver the keynote speech Saturday at the National Association of Counties 81st convention at the Long Beach Convention Center.

The event, which begins Friday and ends Monday, will also feature:

• Jack Dangermond, co-founder and president of Esri, the geographic information systems firm that is the fourth largest privately-held software company in the world.

• Jon Meacham, presidential historian and author.

• Diana Nyad, a record-breaking athlete, sports broadcaster and author.

Topics to be discussed include the nation’s opioid crisis, fighting the Zika virus, mental health in county jails and preparing for active shooter scenarios.
