Stars shine on new hospital league officers: Shirley Wild

Stars shone brightly when Memorial Women’s Hospital League gathered on May 26 at the Long Beach Yacht Club for the installation of incoming officers.

The theme was illuminated with beautiful yellow blooms on a 15-inch foil star centering the tables, surrounded by small gold stars. Table favors (travel items, and a bag of chocolates) wrapped in star cellophane were the finishing touch.

Outgoing president Judy Bogart introduced guests including, Ruby Sobieski, Patricia Leue, Beadette Rosono, Jackie Kell, and Dolores Homen.

Judy, who served four years as president, gave a champagne toast to all the successes the League had during her tenure.

As officers were presented they were given a star-shaped glass bowl, filled with miniature containers of happy juice and candies, as reminders of their Star Power. Introduced were president Bea Almada, Mary Alice Braly, Carole Yochum, Roxae Korseniowski, Toni Ellis, Judy Bogart, Margie Rodriquez, Arlene Fillius, Mary Pat Sabol, Blanca Figueroa, Lourdes Monzon, Jean Stone, and Jean Dayak.

A festive ending and new begiing, ended the program, as the group sang “Applause, Applause.”

L.B. attoeys take to the other court

On May 14, some 40 enthusiastic teis players and supporters joined at the Seal Beach Teis Club for a day of camaraderie and round-robin competition.

Receiving awards of restaurant gift cards were first place wiers in the Red Division, Mustafa Altuner and Ken Doelly, with Steve Gordon and Jean Simpson, second place. Blue Division wiers were Barry Peek and Liz Wood, with Gary DeLong and Boie Do tying down second place.

In thanking the players and supporters Ve reported that this was the most successful teis fundraiser in the eight years of Shortstop Competition.

Between the teis touament and the auction award dier party held a week later, around $4,000 was raised for the Shortstop program, which serves over 600 at-risk youth and families each year. Additionally, the Foundation provides juvenile counseling, anger management classes, and family counseling services. It is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, www.4LBBF.org.

The Auction Award dier party for 12 guests, hosted by Ve and Trish Schooley at their Naples home, was purchased by Erich and Susan Wise at a Shortstop fundraiser. The evening proved a great success with delightful guests and elegant ambience that was enjoyed by Frank and Margie Newell, Russ and Kathy Parsons, John Fielder and Donita von Horick, Tom and Tina Bowman and Shortstop donors Susan and Erich Wise.

L.B. Ability First Installation of Officers

Julie Taboada was installed as president of the Long Beach Center Guild of Ability First for the second consecutive year on May 19 at the Long Beach Yacht Club.

The “classroom” theme was in honor of Julie and all the former teachers present among the 40 attending.

Setting the classroom scene the tables were decorated in black and red (blackboard and apple for the teacher). Incoming officers were presented with a long-stemmed rose and a humorous gift and certificate depicting a school position corresponding to her position on the new board.

“Echoes,” the “sign-to- song” interpreter group from the Center, began the celebration with a moving performance.

Installed were Patricia Randolph, Mary Alice Braly, Linda Silver, Bea Almada, Helen Foster, Liz Minor, Iris Schutz, Marie Drummond, Jean Gross, Caroline Hansen, Aemarie Forster, Jeanette Cheshire, Jean Stone, Arlene Fillius, Pat Leue, Jane Screen and Mary Pat Sabol.

Wanda Sewak, board member emeritus was recognized but unable to attend.

The Guild and its members are dedicated to providing charitable funds to help children and adults with disabilities at the AbilityFirst Long Beach Center. The 52 members of the Guild are looking forward to a special 50 th aiversary event to be held Oct. 22 at The Grand.

LBCC Foundation

Laura Mathews and Mary Thoits were honored by the LBCC Foundation and the Senior Studies Associates Board as the Outstanding Seniors of the Year for a “Lifetime of Service” at the 37th Aual Senior of the Year Luncheon held on May 18 at the Grand.

Laura Mathews has volunteered for the Long Beach Police Department for over 33 years. At 93 she is still serving as a Senior Police Partner providing information on Veterans benefits, social services and mental health resources at safety fairs and in the community. Laura speaks five languages and started providing translation in 1984 during the Olympics and then for the LBPD.

Tom Leary, LBPD Volunteer Coordinator introduced Laura and her many accomplishments. Lucy Daggett accompanied by Eddy Clement sang Laura’s favorite song, “On Eagles Wings” with a special rendition to recognize her service. Mary Thoits was introduced by Rich Archbold for her contributions to the community. Rich

approached the stage with a bag of hats to show and tell about Mary’s adventurous life. He had the audience laughing until it was

time for Lucy Daggett to sing Mary’s favorite song, “Open a New Window.” Mary was joined

on stage by her long-time friend, Tippi Hedren, who also shared some stories with the audience.

The Senior Studies programs operates under the LBCC Foundation to raise money to support and

pay for classes, day tours and activities. In 2017 a new senior center will open at the Pacific

Coast Campus providing a state of the art facility for classes and seminars.
