Supervisors offer rewards in 2 Long Beach killings

The county Board of Supervisors Tuesday renewed a $10,000 reward in an effort to solve a fatal shooting in Long Beach nearly three years ago, and put up another $10,000 reward in coection with an apparently unrelated homicide in the city last September.

About 4 a.m. on Sept. 24, Jeremy Coell McFarland’s body was discovered lying on a grass parkway in the 700 block of East 56th Street, around the coer from where he once lived. He had been shot in the chest and died at the scene, police said.

Supervisor Don Knabe, who recommended offering a $10,000 reward to help draw out reluctant witnesses, said McFarland had family in the area.

Several witnesses said they heard the shots, but no one has come forward to provide a description. Six .32-caliber shell casings and one bullet were recovered from the scene.

Knabe also asked his colleagues to extend a $10,000 reward in the March 28, 2013, death of 19-year-old Sidney Wallace Jr., who was shot in the rear parking lot of an apartment complex in the 200 block of East Hill Street.

Wallace’s 37-year-old cousin and another man, 49, were also shot, but survived.

Police are looking for at least two shooters who fired on Wallace, who they said was not a gang member.

The reward, set to expire March 1, will now be available for at least another 90 days.
