DOWN THE STRETCH

• Frosted, fresh off his monster victory in the Met Mile at Belmont Park on June 11, was installed as the 3-5 moing-line favorite in Saturday’s $1.25 million Grade I Whitney Stakes at Saratoga. Frosted, trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, will be ridden by Joel Rosario and break from the No. 4 post in the six-horse field. Effinex, who’ll have Hall of Famer Mike Smith aboard, is the 7-2 second choice in the 1 1/8-mile race and will start from the outside gate. The rest of the field: El Kabeir (20-1), Comfort (8-1), Upstart (10-1) and Noble Bird (10-1).

• The great Zenyatta, whose only loss in a 20-race career came in her final start (the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs), will be inducted into the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame on Monday. Zenyatta’s trainer, John Shirreffs, told Del Mar’s Gene Williams that he never felt her closing kick would fall short. “I never thought of her not wiing,” he said. “The only time I felt like, ‘Boy, I hope she wins this race,’ was when she was about to break the record (16 consecutive victories held by Citation and Cigar).” She won her 17th consecutive race in the Vanity Handicap at Hollywood Park in 2010.

• The latest thoroughbred racing economic indicators have been released. For July, wagering on U.S. races, which includes money bet world-wide, showed a 12.28 percent increase over the same month in 2015. Race purses were up 11.87 percent and the number of race days in the country showed a 5.72 percent increase. Wagering on U.S. races totaled $6,559,098,286 for the first seven months of 2016, a 2.80 percent hike. Purses were up 1.45 percent for the year and number of race days was down 2.69 percent.
