Trani and pals tee up for Boys & Girls Clubs of LB

On July 25, friends and supporters of local Long Beach icon Phil Trani raised over $53,500 in the second aual Charity Golf Touament to benefit the youth of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach.

The touament has netted nearly $100,000 in the past two years and half of the proceeds will be invested at the Long Beach Community Foundation in the Phil Trani Sports Fund permanent endowment for the Clubs, and the other half for sports programs for kids at the Clubs this year.

Chief Executive Officer of the Clubs, Don Rodriguez, thanked Phil for being the first person in the 77-year history of the Boys & Girls Clubs to create a permanent endowment which will help the Clubs for all future generations to enjoy sports.

Skylinks Golf Course hosted a full field of golfers with various games and contests at different holes.

The touament concluded with a reception, dier, and auction at Phil Trani’s Restaurant emceed by legendary sports commentator Alan Massengale, formerly of ESPN SportsCenter. There was lively bidding on an assortment of raffle and auction items that included Dodgers and Angels premium ticket packages, various gift packages, and JetBlue tickets.

The live auction was highlighted by items such as vacations rentals in Mammoth and a popular magnum donated by Southe Wine & Spirits. The auction excitement peaked with TMI’s donation of a harbor cruise on their beautifully restored yacht, Alcyon, which sold twice for $1,000 each.

Trani, a former member of the Boys & Girls Clubs, recalls waiting as a youth outside of the Club until the doors were unlocked so he could play sports in the gym and the fields. His family could not afford teis shoes at the time, so he played in his socks.

During the reception, Don Rodriguez, presented Trani with a brand new pair of sneakers and a Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach Lifetime Member t-shirt.

“No other youth coming to the Boys & Girls Clubs should be without teis shoes,” Rodriguez said, “and as a result of the touament, this will be made possible.”

Footlighters Music in the Moing

More than 176 attendees enjoyed the Musical Theatre West Footlighters’ “Music in the Moing” luncheon at the Long Beach Yacht Club on June 25.

MTW Executive Director/Producer Paul Garman welcomed everyone and introduced members of the upcoming production of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” who entertained an electrified audience.

Carrying out the theme, were tables embellished with mirrored glass and martini glasses overflowing with pearls, surrounded by soft blue napkins.

Paul also introduced the latest Footlighters Scholarship recipient, Jisel Ayon, a recent graduate of Millikan High School. With a passion for musical theater, Jisel performed a rousing “Gimme Gimme” from “Thoroughly Mode Millie.”

Footlighters President Peggy Miller expressed appreciation to the Footlighters Board of Directors for their hard work in realizing more than $26,000 this year in support of MTW’s Education/Outreach Program.Parliamentarian Grace Carroll conducted the unanimous election of officers for the upcoming year: Ly Gesner, Shirley Nyquist, Doa Estrin, Nancy Eilers, and Sharon Civalleri, Jan Foster, Peggy Miller, Marilyn Lonsdale and Giy Pace.

Opportunity drawing prizes, organized by Barbara Loureiro, featured a children’s basket, signed mystery books, Nordstrom and P.F. Chang’s gift cards, handmade greeting card and more.

Assistance League of Long Beach

Vickie Sullos was installed as the 76th president of Assistance League of Long Beach on May 23, at The Centre at Sycamore Plaza. Centerpieces were crystal banded vases holding pink or white orchids, placed on black draped tables with pink and white napkins.

Special awards were presented to County Supervisor Don Knabe, who received the Flo Brooks Community Service Award; Catherine Vandenberg Smith received the Ada Laughlin Edwards Award; the President’s Award went to Cynthia Terry; and a Special Award for Exemplary Service went to Aette Kashiwabara, Executive Director of ALLB.

Outgoing President Suzae Powell presented Vickie Sullos with the presidents gavel and the traditional Winifred Campbell white orchid.
