Police identify woman, 4-year-old girl killed near downtown Long Beach

A 26-year-old woman and her 4-year-old daughter were killed in a shooting in the downtown area of Long Beach late Saturday night, authorities said today.

Police said Sunday that officers responded to the area of Locust Avenue and E. 9th Street at about 10:20 p.m., and found the woman and girl had been shot by unknown assailants, according to a statement from police.

The woman, identified as Carina Mancera, was declared dead at the scene by fire persoel, police said. The girl, identified as Jeabel Anaya, was transported to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center in critical condition, but she died from her injuries early Sunday moing, a Coroner’s spokeswoman said.

Police said the woman, her husband and daughter had just arrived home and were walking to their nearby residence when the shooting occurred.

Police as of Sunday afteoon have no information on the possible shooter or shooters. A motive was not known.

Long Beach police said detectives believe people in the area witnessed the crime, and urged them to come forward. Anyone with information regarding the shooting to call detectives Scott Lasch and Michael Hubbard at 562-570-7244.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story said the girl was 3 years old, which is what the Coroner reported. Police said she is 4.
