Questions remain about infant found dead in North Long Beach

An infant found dead by neighbors Tuesday in an alley surrounded by a cardboard box and debris has yet to be identified, police said today.

Police were called to 67th Street and Gardenia Avenue at 4:22 p.m. on the report that an infant’s body had been bued, said Detective Claudia Lopez of the Long Beach Police Department.

The body was that “of an infant and it’s not bued, but in a stage of decomposition that would give it that appearance,” Lopez said.

The infant was found by neighborhood residents who were walking in an alley where 67th Street and Gardenia Avenue meet, police said.

The cause of death is unknown, and will be determined by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Officer. The coroner will also determine the infant’s age and race.

The investigation remains ongoing and police are asking for the public’s help. If anyone is aware of someone who was recently pregnant, but is no longer in that condition, and is not caring for an infant, police would like to speak with them.
