Deadline to return home arrives for Porter Ranch residents

One deadline arrived Wednesday and another comes Thursday for Porter Ranch residents who voluntarily left their homes because of a leaking Southe Califoia Gas company well that spewed methane into the air above their homes for 111 days.

Wednesday was the last night the company will pay for a hotel room, the reimbursement to people who relocated with a friend or family and the last covered night of pet boarding.

On Thursday – pending any last-minute extensions – those residents must check out of their hotels or other temporary housing while the meal allowance, mileage, pet pick up and child transportation ends.

So far, 2,081 households have checked out of temporary housing, the company said.

People who relocated into rental homes or apartments can remain in those locations until the lease expires.

The state Department of Conservation declared the leak sealed last Thursday.

The leaking well in the company’s Aliso Canyon storage field pumped an estimated 94,067 metric tons of methane into the air, according to the Califoia Air Resources Board.
