LA Fleet Week sailors joining this year's Labor Day run over Vincent Thomas Bridge

A Labor Day tradition, this year’s Conquer the Bridge Race over the Vincent Thomas Bridge will get a cadenced sound track this year as hundreds of sailors in town for LA Fleet Week join the challenge.

“They’ll run as part of teams and formations, they’re supposed to be in cadence,” said Michael-Patrick Hogue, producer of the aual Labor Day race now in its eighth year.

Also participating Monday along with the Navy will be members of the Coast Guard and Marine Corps.

Online registration ($50 entry fee) remains open until Thursday night at www.active.com and, after that, will be available through Road Ruer Sports, 25359 Crenshaw Blvd. (across from Mimi’s Cafe) Torrance, (310-326-8530, Ext. 2) after that.

Participants also can sign up on the morning of the race ($60 late fee), which this year begins at 7 a.m. Participants are asked to wear sunglasses and hats.

The race typically draws some 3,000 participants eager to experience on foot San Pedro’s landmark Vincent Thomas Bridge that spans the Port of Los Angeles’ Main Chael.

The course is 5.3 miles, taking participants from Harbor Boulevard up and over the bridge, closed to traffic, and back again.

No backpacks, dogs or strollers are permitted on the course.

While growing in popularity since it began in 2009 with 1,500 participants, the run-walk will enjoy a higher profile this year as it lands on the last day of what will be the inaugural LA Fleet Week event at the Port of Los Angeles.
