
Social workers, secretaries and others health workers at St. Mary Medical Center voted to unionize Wednesday.
According to an aouncement from SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West Friday, 90 workers in total elected to join the union. Hospital administration could not immediately be reached for comment, but officials are sending comment.
The employees who elected to join the union represent a wide swath of professions including: case managers, medical record coders, office assistants, family educators, dental hygienists, parent coaches, community outreach program specialists, benefit specialists, referral authorization representatives, patient account representatives, medical assistants, dental assistants and drivers/couriers.
More than 1,700 hospital workers statewide have joined SEIU-UHW in the last year, the union said.
St. Mary Medical Center was established in 1923 and is a 389-bed hospital. It has 600 physicians and more than 1,350 employees, of whom 526 are already members of SEIU-UHW, the union said.
