Seen at the Scene: Beverly O'Neill honored at namesake theater

More than 150 guests gathered on Feb. 12 outside the former Center Theater to celebrate the newly named Beverly O’Neill Theater.

The Center was renamed by the Long Beach City Council in recognition of O’Neill’s great service to Long Beach.

The Beverly O’Neill Theater is home to Inteational City Theatre, Long Beach’s resident professional theater company celebrating its 31st aiversary and its 20th year at this location.

Mayor Robert Garcia, ICT board vice president Mort Stuhlbarg and artistic director Caryn Desai spoke of Beverly O’Neill’s history and support of the city, the arts and Inteational City Theatre. This was followed by a ribbon cutting by former Mayor O’Neill, with participation by Mayor Garcia, Stuhlbarg, Long Beach CVB CEO Steve Goodling, SMG General Manager Charlie Beie, and desai.

A walk down the red carpet into the theater lobby led to a festive buffet dier catered by Savor in the lobby prior to ICT’s performance.

Founding artistic director, Shashin Desai presented O’Neill with a bouquet of flowers in the theater prior to “Closer Than Ever,” the music of Maltby and Shire, with poignant, thoughtful and humorous story songs about life. After the show, guests mingled in the lobby with the artists and O’Neill enjoying dessert and coffee.

Miller Children’s fashion show

Celebrating its 60th aual Designer Fashion Show & Silent Auction Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach Auxiliary raised about $40,000 on Feb. 20 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

This year’s proceeds will benefit the Child Life Program at Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach with a state of the art patient and family education center to be located in the children’s hospital lobby area.

Celebrating its 70th year Aiversary the members of MCHLBA are proud to aounce they have raised more than $15 million for the care of young patients and their families.

Under the guidance of president, Glenda Wycoff, fashion show chair Margie Pey, auction chair Pam Duran and reservation chair Roxie Hause, the event drew a crowd of nearly 400 attendees. Guests were greeted with beautiful music by pianist Richard Castle as they meandered and bid their way through the silent auction.

Some 180 themed baskets filled with gift cards and restaurant certificates, stand-alone items including sports tickets, hotel stays and lunch with a Secret Service agent. A special “Magic Purse” filled with more than $700 worth of cash and gift cards added to the silent auction. J & L Jewelers provided an abundance of jewelry both real and faux to tempt attendees.

Style gurus Dolorie Thuer, Collette Anderson and Sandy Pearlman and security “guards,” the two Jims, McClung and Pey, helped shoppers buy many a bauble.

Master of ceremonies Rick Papp (brother of Auxiliary member Sondra Williamson) kept both the silent auction and program ruing at a lively pace.

The latest fashions were presented by Elie Tahari and Lourdes Chavez Couture.

The Tahari’s collection defines mode sophistication with understated grace and elegance while the Lourdes Chavez collection featured daytime fashions to Oscar-worthy gowns. The models were lovely and the gentlemen models , with an elegant pooch in tow, drew the ubiquitous enthusiastic whistles.

The ballroom dancers, Lind and Okuner, were also a big hit as they gracefully danced the cha-cha and foxtrot on the runway.

Miguel and Richard from Stalks & Blooms Florist adoed the luncheon tables with heart shaped centerpieces filled with white hydrangeas and red tulips. Leslie Schlauch presented a beautiful bouquet to Margie Pey in recognition of her service for many years as fashion show chair and for her multiple years as past president of the auxiliary.
