This week’s mailbag, like we didn’t see this coming, was about our column regarding the candidate Donald Trump and the Republican Senate’s swear-to-God decision that its members are not going to even be seen in the same district as a President Obama Supreme Court nominee because they deem him to be a lame duck, which isn’t true. A duck is deemed to be lame during the period when it is still in office after a new duck has been elected or appointed to replace him but has yet to assume the duties of that office.
Also predictably, the response can be broken into two categories: Wise readers and morons.
The bulk of response is of the social media variety, although we did get an email from reader John T, who wrote our least-favorite thing: “Tim, your columns are entertaining when you stick to pets, drinking, eating or historical events.” Grrr. “Where you become a boring piece of diatribe is when you venture into politics. Today’s column is a prime example of why joualism has degraded to a level of mediocrity and opinion rather than facts.... Do you think you could be contributing to these ‘historically idiotic times’?”
By pointing out that these are historically idiotic times? No. We’re a non-contributor, because we’re not going to vote for Trump. We might not even pull our head out of the sand to admit he’s wiing. If you watched the Republican debate Thursday night and you don’t think... oh, lord, never mind. Why do we even try?
It’s really very simple, Idea John Dameron: “If you want socialism and govement control you pick Hillary. If not, you pick Trump.” That’s spin-aroundable, but we’ll let it go.
Let’s go to the yay-sayers on Facebook:
“Great article!” hollers Suzie Hughes. “It’s frightening to think this dangerous clown could possibly become president.”
“(Your column) would have been fuy if it wasn’t so frightening,” noted Lovetta Kramer (happy belated birthday!). “I’ve been amazed at the people I know who have climbed on (Trump’s) bandwagon. And there’s no discussing it. It’s as if they’re being directed to follow some sort of mind control beam.”
OK, let’s simmer down and see what’s up in Lakewood, whence this letter from Don Prey, who writes, “We go out every Friday night (‘date night’) BUT avoid Long Beach because of having to PAY for parking wherever we ‘dine’ or shop! “We often visit Lakewood Restaurant Row on Candlewood. There is most any kinds of food you could want AND YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY TO EAT THERE!”

OK, first, quit yelling at us. Second: Paying for parking isn’t a deal-breaker for us, but if it is, there are plenty of restaurants in town – even some to rival Lakewood’s mighty Restaurant Row’s.
There are great dining spots in Marina Pacifica and the MarketPlace and Alamitos Bay and Fourth Street’s Retro Row and Bixby Knolls and Broadway. We could eat at a different restaurant every night in Long Beach for the rest of our lives (we’re old) and never pay a dime for parking.
Still, that doesn’t beat Lakewood, because in Long Beach restaurants you still have to pay to eat there.
