
CERRITOS — Authorities today identified a man who was killed in a deputy-involved shooting in Cerritos.
The shooting occurred about 5:14 p.m. Wednesday outside a 7-Eleven store at Alondra Boulevard and Studebaker Road, said Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
Francisco Garcia, 26, of Norwalk died at a hospital, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.
Sheriff’s Lt. Eddie Heandez told ABC7 that the deputy was checking on a stolen car out of Whittier when the DIS occurred.
“The deputy told the suspect to get out of the car,” Heandez told ABC7. “Instead, the suspect tued on the car, and the deputy, in fear for his life, opened fire on the suspect.”
Heandez said the deputy was struck by the suspect’s car and suffered minor injuries. He also said the deputy performed CPR on the suspect.
The shooting was being investigated by the sheriff’s Homicide and Inteal Affairs bureaus, the county’s Office of the Inspector General and the Los Angeles County’s District Attoey’s Office’s Justice System Integrity Division.
