Vigil plaed near North Long Beach site where dead newborn baby was found

Long Beach Councilman Rex Richardson and the Hamilton Neighborhood Association plan to hold a candlelight vigil Wednesday night to call attention to Los Angeles County’s Safe Surrender Program.

Richardson’s office aounced plans for the vigil on Monday, nearly one week after a the body of a newbo baby was found in a North Long Beach alley near the intersection of 67th Street and Gardenia Avenue.

The event is scheduled to begin 6 p.m. Wednesday at that intersection. Following remarks by attending speakers, the vigil itself is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.

The Safe Surrender Program allows anyone with legal custody to leave a newbo at a Los Angeles County hospital or fire station up to 72 hours after the child’s birth.
