A Cal State Long Beach student has been named one of 2016’s 10 new faces of civil engineering in college, the American Society of Civil Engineers said.

The new faces program spotlights the next generation of civil engineering leaders by highlighting their academic success, volunteering and dedication to making a positive impact on society through civil engineering.

Engineering wonder-student

Cody Dodge, a senior at CSULB, promotes civil engineering as president of CSULB’s American Society of Civil Engineers student chapter.

He also intes with the Long Beach-based contractor Traylor Bros, where he has been working on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Regional Coector Transit Corridor Project in Downtown Los Angeles.

Metro transit project

The project will extend from the 7th Street/Metro Center Station to the Gold Line Little Tokyo/Arts District Station, coecting the Long Beach-to-L.A. Blue Line and the Los Angeles Westside Expo Line to the Gold Line. The 1.9-mile subway will serve Little Tokyo, the Arts District, Los Angeles Civic Center, Historic Core, Bunker Hill and the Financial District.

This new rail extension, expected to be completed in 2020, also will provide a one-seat ride for travel across Los Angeles County. Passengers will be able to travel from Azusa to Long Beach and from East Los Angeles to Santa Monica without transferring twice, as they do now.

Excited about engineering

“Technological advances to help identify and fix problems early on in design, like constructability and safety, make me excited to see where the field is headed,” Dodge said in a statement aouncing his naming to the new faces program.

Dodge is also a member of Chi Epsilon, the civil engineering honor society, and Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society.

Dodge is in the ruing to be the national representative for the new faces program. If he wins, Dodge would receive a $500 scholarship.

Founded in 1852, the American Society of Civil Engineers represents more than 150,000 civil engineers worldwide and is the United State’s oldest national engineering society.
