Long Beach deputy fire chief resigns to head Huntington Beach Fire Department

A veteran Long Beach firefighter of nearly 30 years and current deputy fire chief has resigned to begin a new position as Huntington Beach Fire Chief, city officials aounced Wednesday.

Deputy Chief David A. Segura’s last day with the Long Beach Fire Department will be March 18; he was hired as a firefighter April 21, 1986. Over his career he also served as a paramedic, captain, battalion chief and assistant chief.

“For the past 30 years, it has been my privilege and honor to have served the great community of Long Beach,” Segura said in a statement. “I am grateful to our employees and their commitment to public service, and I am thankful for the support and the leadership of our city management team and our elected officials. While it is difficult to leave Long Beach, I look forward to the personal and professional challenges that come with this wonderful opportunity for me and my family.”

Segura currently directs the Support Services Bureau, which consists of the Emergency Medical Services Division, Training Division, Fleet Management, Fire Communications and the IT section, according to the city. He is responsible for the recruitment and initial screening of potential fire recruit candidates.

He has held many certifications including a paramedic license, urban search and rescue technician, hazardous materials specialist and state certified hazardous materials safety officer and instructor. He has a bachelor’s degree in occupational studies from Cal State Long Beach, where he is eaing his master’s degree in public administration.

“Deputy Chief Segura has been a tremendous asset for the Long Beach Fire Department for nearly three decades,” said Fire Chief Mike DuRee in a statement. “His dedication to the fire service and his steadfast commitment to the community we serve shows on a daily basis. We are so proud of Dave’s promotion to Fire Chief in Huntington Beach and know that he will serve that community with the same level of professionalism that has become his hallmark in Long Beach.”
