Tryouts for anyone interested in becoming a seasonal lifeguard with the Long Beach Fire Department will be held at 8 a.m. Sunday.

The open test is open to all who are interested and will be held at Long Beach Lifeguard Beach Operations 2100 E. Ocean Blvd. The best access for parking is to enter off Junipero Avenue. Each candidate must bring a swimsuit, towel, Social Security card and photo identification.

Qualifications:

• No prior training or experience is required

• Must be 17 as of July 1

• Any applicant under 18 must possess a valid work permit from his or her high school, high school diploma or G.E.D. prior to the start of the training program.

Exam schedule:

• 8 a.m. briefing and sign-up

• 9 a.m. 1,000-yard ocean swim

• 9:30 a.m. run-swim-run

• Noon, aounce candidate list for pre-employment scored oral interview

• 12:30 p.m. pre-employment interviews begin

• 2:30 p.m. pre-employee briefing

Placing in the 1,000-yard ocean swim and run-swim-run will determine who moves forward to the pre-employment scored oral interviews.

The eight-day, 80-hour training program is tentatively scheduled for the following four consecutive weekends:

• May 7-8

• May 21-22

• May 28-29

• June 4-5

Training will begin at 8 a.m. and include instruction in lifeguard tactics, operations, first aid, DOT first responder, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, rescue buoys, rescue boards and timed events. The final day of training will include comprehensive written and practical testing.

Starting pay for a Seasonal Lifeguard is $19.97 per hour.
