Steven Dwayne Brown, a 52-year-old Long Beach man convicted of stabbing his girlfriend’s mother to death, was sentenced to 86 years to life in state prison Friday moing.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Laura Laesecke also ordered Brown to pay $30,055.63 restitution.

Brown was convicted of first-degree murder Jan. 27 in the Oct. 11, 2013 killing Kellye Taylor, 53, at Orizaba Park. She and two other teachers were supervising children from the nearby K-6 Huntington Academy as they played as part of a weekly outing.

Brown testified in his own defense during the trial, claiming that the attack on Taylor was in self-defense. He said he approached the victim in the park merely to talk to her about her smoking in front of his children; he said he saw her reach into her purse for black object and he was afraid, and that’s when he pulled a 7.5 inch knife from inside his pocket and stabbed the teacher in the neck.
