District Attorney, Ridley-Thomas draw no opponents as filing period ends

District Attoey Jackie Lacey and Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas did not draw any opponents as the deadline to file to run for most offices in Los Angeles County in the June primary election passed Friday.

Eight candidates filed to run for the Fifth District seat on the Board of Supervisors and three for the Fourth District seat, according to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk. The incumbents in both those districts are barred from seeking re-election because of term limits.

Los Angeles City Councilman Mitchell Englander filed Friday to run for the Fifth District seat held by Mike Antonovich since 1980.

The field also includes Kathryn Barger, Antonovich’s chief deputy, who has received his endorsement, state Sen. Bob Huff, R-San Dimas, and Glendale Mayor Ara Najarian.

Deputy District Attoey Elan Carr, who unsuccessfully sought the 33rd Congressional District seat in 2014, Altadena Town Council Member Billy Malone, Darrell Park, who describes himself as a educator/budget specialist and real estate investor Rajpal Kahlon also completed the filing process.

The district includes the Antelope and Santa Clarita valleys and portions of the San Gabriel and San Feando valleys.

Three candidates filed to run for the Fourth District seat held by Don Knabe since 1996 -- Rep. Janice Hahn, D-San Pedro, former Manhattan Beach Mayor Steve Napolitano, Knabe’s senior deputy who has received his endorsement and Ralph Pacheco, a member of the Whittier Union High School District Board of Trustees.

The district runs from Diamond Bar in the northeast, east to Downey, south to Long Beach, includes the Harbor and much of the South Bay area, continuing north to Marina Del Rey.

Some candidates who completed filing may not appear on the ballot because they did not submit enough valid signatures.

If no candidate in a race for a seat on the nonpartisan Board of Supervisors receives a majority in the primary, the top two finishers will meet in a runoff in November.

The filing period will be extended to Wednesday for offices where no incumbent files, except for those where the incumbent caot seek re-election because of term limits.

The June 7 ballot will also include primaries for president, the U.S. Senate seat held by Barbara Boxer, who is not seeking re-election, all of Califoia’s 53 congressional seats, 20 of the 40 state Senate seats and all 80 seats in the Assembly.
