
SAN BERNARDINO >> A 12-year-old is dead and a 14-year-old wounded following a shooting late Sunday night near a San Beardino gas station, police officials said Monday moing.
The double-shooting took place just after 10 p.m. at the coer of North Orange Street and East Love Lane, said San Beardino police Lt. Rich Lawhead.
“When you hear 12-year-old, that’s a kid,” said Lawhead. “It’s a tragedy.”
After the shooting, the two victims -- both boys -- ran a block north to the Circle K gas station at East Highland Avenue and North Orange Street, according to reports.
The 14-year-old managed to run into the Circle K, his 12-year-old cousin collapsed on the sidewalk. He soon after died, officials said.
The wounded 14-year-old boy was transported to a hospital where his condition is currently unknown.
Authorities are searching for a dark-colored SUV seen fleeing the scene following the shooting, according to initial reports. It’s unclear if the shooting is gang-related.
Vincent Brewer has lived in the neighborhood for six years and says shootings are common in this area.
“I’m thinking it’s about time to move “ he said.
Brewer said he heard two clusters of shots fired Sunday night. A witness also said she heard about four to five shots.
“It’s scary,” she said. “It’s been like that for the last few nights.”
Another woman said the violence near Highland and Orange seems to be centered around several nearby apartment complexes.
“In the alley, you see the tagging and the next day it’s crossed out,” she said. “The next day there’s a shooting.”
Due to the current situation, San Beardino police have stepped up patrols in the area.
No motive has been released in this shooting.
