  • Roe Restaurant to open (again) in Belmont Shore

  • نیلوبلاگ

Chef Arthur Gonzalez said he is weeks away from realizing his goal of opening a new seafood place, called Roe Restaurant, in Belmont Shore after experiencing so many challenges there that he ended up opening an entirely different restaurant since his first attempt four years ago. “We’re starting to come down to crunch time,” Gonzalez said. Late last week, the future home of Roe Restaurant was still a dusty construction site in the space next to its sister enterprise Roe Xpress, a fish market selling dishes prepared from the likes of salmon, mahi mahi, yellowtail and octopus, as well as a place where clam “chowdah” is spelled with Boston accent even though Hatch chiles are part of the recipe....

City officials and community groups are mulling two separate “road diet” projects, one in Belmont Shore from the Belmont Pier to Alamitos Bay, and other on the Peninsula from 54th Place to 72nd Street. Traffic may be reduced to one lane in each direction of the coastline stretches, in favor of bike lanes and more parking. “When we talk about it, the most common conce is that we’re going to cause traffic congestion,” city traffic engineer Eric Widstrand said. “That’s what we want to do. • Wally the humpback whale keeps returning to shore

  • نیلوبلاگ

When Wally the whale washed up dead at popular Dockweiler State Beach next to LAX just before the Fourth of July weekend, the 40-ton carcass was towed out to sea with hopes it would decompose far from the shoreline, allowing nature to take its course. But the bobbing, 45-foot whale didn’t stay out in the open ocean. Less than a week later, the 45-foot-long humpback resurfaced near San Pedro. Lifeguards again towed it out to sea. On Sunday, however, the carcass made its way close to shore in Newport Beach, when lifeguards spent the entire day towing it away from the crowded beaches. Then, a strong south wind oveight again brought the humpback close to shore Monday moing, and lifeguards were w...

Curious onlookers are being kept 200 feet from the carcass as marine mammal rescuers, lifeguards and county Beaches and Harbors Department workers plan to tow it back out to sea. The cause of its death is being investigated. “It’s on its back now but, when it was right side up, I thought I saw an injury on its head. But hard to tell,” said Marine Animal Rescue Director Peter Wallerstein. “From the underbelly, there are no signs of trauma.” The whale’s rorqual pleats, which are like its neck, were exposed as it laid in the surf. ...

  • Vietnam vet gets 6 years in prison for beating woman in Gardena over parking space

  • نیلوبلاگ

A 71-year-old man who beat and kicked a young mother blocking his path into a parking space in Gardena was sentenced Thursday to six years in prison despite pleas for leniency from family members and claims of post-traumatic stress disorder from three tours in Vietnam. Roy Foster Otis of Los Angeles was sentenced during an emotionally charged Torrance Superior Court hearing in which Otis at first denied committing the crime, saying he was provoked by the victim, but following his statement with an apology. “I am sorry that this happened,” Otis told Judge Hector Guzman. “I wasn’t trying to break the law. It was almost like a snowball rolling down the hill.” A Torrance jury convicted Otis las...

  • A little help gets Creator to Belmont winner's circle

  • نیلوبلاگ

NEW YORK >> A little gamesmanship, a celebrity chef added to the mix, and a stirring finish paid huge dividends all around when Creator came through in the Belmont Stakes. Credit the well-played hand to Creator’s owner Key Trout’s WinStar Farm. Here’s how it worked: Preakness wier Exaggerator came into the $1.5 million Belmont as the favorite and one of many in the field who rally from well back in the pack, Creator among them. A fleet front-ruer to set a fast early pace could be a huge help. Enter Gettysburg. Also owned by WinStar, but trained by Todd Pletcher, who already had two horses in the race, Gettysburg fit the bill as a quick starter. Before he was entered, he was sent from P...

Jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr., pointed to the sky in an appropriate wiing salute given the horse’s name. “Today was perfect for us by inches,” said Steve Asmussen, who will be inducted into racing’s Hall of Fame this summer at Saratoga. “Being the victor of the Belmont Stakes will look good on that plaque.” The 50-year-old trainer has won more than 7,300 races, including the Preakness with champions Curlin in 2007 and Rachel Alexandra in 2009. Where Exaggerator ends up in the record books will be determined Saturday, when the Preakness wier takes on a dozen rivals in the 148th ruing of the final leg of the Triple Crown at Belmont Park. A year ago, American Pharoah captured racing’s ultimate prize by becoming the first horse in 37 years to sweep the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont. Nyquist beat Exaggerator by 1 1/2 lengths in the Derby last month, but the determined ruer-up came back two weeks later and splashed his way to victory in the Preakness. • Wilson: Exaggerator might need sloppy track to win Belmont

  • نیلوبلاگ

Exaggerator will not win the Belmont Stakes on Saturday if it’s a fast track. There, I said it. I’m on record as believing Exaggerator, the 9-5 moing-line Belmont favorite, is a very good colt that moves way up when the track is sloppy. Don’t believe me? He’s recorded three Beyer Speed Figures of greater than 100 during his 11-race career, and two of those came in his two most visually impressive races — a 6 1/4-length romp in the Santa Anita Derby on April 9 and a 3 1/2-length runaway in the Preakness on May 21 — that both came over sloppy tracks. There are those who disagree with me, most notably trainer Dale Romans, who is scheduled to saddle Preakness ruer-up Cherry Wine and Brody’s Cau...
