Rio de Janeiro >> As a dark and wet moing on South America’s Atlantic coast slipped into a darker, wetter afteoon, Switzerland’s Fabian Cancellara sliced his way across a demanding Olympic Games time trial course of rain-slicked roads, a red, white and black blur of power and efficiency streaking through the gloom. Miles away from Rio’s Olympic venues, both the iconic and the expensive, miles away from the tourists and the foreign network TV compounds along the Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, Cancellara rocketed through one final convincing reminder that he has been the greatest rider of his generation against the clock. Cancellara recaptured the Olympic Games time trial gold medal he...

Brenda Martinez had just experienced one of the more disappointing moments in her career. She had finished the 800 meters at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon in seventh place, only because she got clipped by another ruer and lost her balance as she was about to take the lead in the home stretch. There would be no Olympic berth in that event. She took a moment to gather her thoughts, grabbed her belongings and found a spot by a television monitor under a tent adjacent to the field just in time to see her training mate, Boris Berian, ruing his 800. He finished second to punch his ticket to Rio de Janiero. She found consolation in his triumph. “The day didn’t have to be a total loss,”...

As Southe Califoia continues to struggle through this summer’s unrelenting smog, a study released Wednesday gives a stark reminder of why air quality matters. Researchers believe hundreds of people die each year because of Southe Califoia’s poor air quality. Pollution levels routinely exceed the levels deemed safe by health professionals. In the report, the Long Beach and South Bay areas are included in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale category, where about 1,341 people are estimated to die each year because of bad air. That makes the L.A. area’s air quality the deadliest in the nation. The Riverside-San Beardino-Ontario metropolitan area was second worst, with about 808 people estimated...

RIO DE JANEIRO — Diana Taurasi and the U.S. women’s basketball team opened their Olympics with a record rout. The Americans were not expected to be challenged on Sunday by Senegal, and the only real suspense was how many records they would set. When it ended, they had set three Olympic marks: Points scored in a game, margin of victory and assists. The players and the US coaching staff were happy with how the team set the records. With a team of WNBA MVPs and All-Stars, the Americans constantly made the extra pass on offense that led to open shots or layups in the 121-56 victory. Sue Bird had eight of the team’s US record 36 assists. “When we move the ball like that and the ball doesn’t get ...

BIG SUR >> As fires continue to bu across Big Sur, flames and heavy smoke are threatening not just homes and businesses, but also some of the area’s most famous residents: dozens of endangered Califoia condors. Biologists who have spent years painstakingly nurturing North America’s largest bird back from the brink of extinction say so far none of the 82 condors that live in the Big Sur area has been killed by the Soberanes Fire. But the blaze -- which began two weeks ago with an illegal campfire and by Friday had charred 53,900 acres, an area nearly twice the size of San Francisco -- already has destroyed one of the six stations south of Carmel where researchers leave dead animals for ...

Both good news and bad news could await if San Pedro’s historic Waer Grand Theatre goes big time with a professional operator now being sought by the city of Los Angeles, which owns the venue. Sixth St. Uncertainty remains over how an outside operator might impact the theater’s future, especially in how it serves the immediate community. The good The theater is in serious need of improvements that the city says will cost $3.5 million, though some beli...

THOUSAND OAKS - A black bear was spotted in Malibu Creek State Park in an area that hasn’t had a regular bear population since the 1800s. National Park Service employees discovered the bear via two “camera traps” they had set up in the park, which is located in the Santa Monica Mountains. In the decades since the bears’ pre-1900s heydey in the Santa Monica Mountains, they have settled on the north end of Los Angeles in the Santa Susana and San Gabriel mountains and are rarely seen south of the 101 Freeway, the NPS said. But at least one bear has ventured into the Santa Monica Mountains, and its image was captured on the remote camera July 26. At least one other bear has ventured into the ye...

America is crippled by crime, terrorism and economic stagnation. Or: Strength through unity guides an already great nation through myriad challenges. After seemingly endless months of debates and primaries, allegations and celebrations, and, at last, this month’s Republican and Democratic conventions, the official campaign march to November is really, truly under way. And no one can say the two finalists haven’t crafted two very different strategies in hopes of securing the keys to the White House. And two starkly different visions of America. The GOP convention in Cleveland hammered home the notion that America is in peril and can only be rescued by Donald Trump and not Washington elites l...

Southe Califoia is in for a hot — and likely fiery — summer. And late autumn may not provide a reprieve from the flames, either. The ferocious wildfire ravaging thousands of acres in Santa Clarita may portend a relentless fire season that could last into November and December, leaving firefighters to play a game of whack-a-mole — struggling to put out one blaze after another, fire officials and meteorologists waed on Monday. These fires, they added, could be hotter and spread faster than in the past because the years-long drought has sapped chaparral, brush and trees of moisture, and climate forecasts predict hotter than average weather into December. Dry conditions and hot weather are the ...

Southe Califoia employers face a variety of challenges, and one of the most pressing is an ever-widening skills gap that often results in positions being unfilled for long periods of time.
