A group of students at Rim of the World High School in Lake Arrowhead have created a stir for displaying Confederate flags, staked into the beds of their pickup trucks, in the school parking lot. On Friday, two Ford pickups, parked side-by-side, sat parked in the school parking lot, one Confederate flag and one American flag displayed in the bed of each truck. The black pickup also sported stickers from Patriot Alliance, an online retailer of clothing, National Rifle Association, and Donald Trump campaign signs. Also on Friday, Ruing Springs resident Jeifer Celise-Reyes, whose daughter began her freshman year at the high school last month, said she sent emails to school board president Cind...

CHICAGO >> Courts have dealt setbacks in three states to Republican efforts that critics contend restrict voting rights — blocking a North Carolina law requiring photo identification, loosening a similar measure in Wisconsin and halting strict citizenship requirements in Kansas. The rulings Friday came as the 2016 election moves into its final phase, with Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton locked in a high-stakes presidential race and control of the U.S. Senate possibly hanging in the balance. North Carolina is one of about a dozen swing states in the presidential race, while Wisconsin has voted Democratic in recent presidential elections and Kansas has been solidly R...

Second District Councilwoman Jeaine Pearce is starting her first term on the City Council with a recommendation to hoist the rainbow flag, a universal symbol for LGBTQ rights, at City Hall year round. Pearce, who is in the first month of her four-year term, said the move would show support for the LGBTQ community both locally and nationwide as a fight for marriage equality continues. “While there has been significant progress in the LGBTQ community’s fight for equal rights in the last few years, there is much more that needs to happen for true equality,” she wrote in a report on the item. “Some states have enacted blatantly discriminatory laws in a backlash to marriage equality and national ...

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana — Police made nearly 200 arrests in Louisiana’s capital city during weekend protests around the country in which people angry over police killings of young black men sought to block some major interstates. Riot police in full gear stopped protesters in Baton Rouge from walking onto an interstate on Sunday evening, police said, thwarting a protest tactic that social justice activists have increasingly tried in several U.S. cities. Further protests are expected Monday. Tensions between black citizens and police have risen since last week’s killings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge and Philando Castile in Miesota by white officers, and a retaliatory attack on police by a ...

The deadline for Palos Verdes Estates to begin making changes at Lunada Bay passed Wednesday, and the city has met only some of the Califoia Coastal Commission’s demands to start making the area more welcoming. In a letter June 6, Coastal Commission Enforcement Agent Jordan Sanchez gave the city until July 6 to start the process of improving public access to Lunada Bay, which has become notorious as the stomping ground for a group of aggressive surfers known as the Bay Boys. In the letter, Sanchez called on the city to improve public amenities on the bluffs above the bay, and to address a long-standing, illegally built patio at the water’s edge that the commission calls a fort. The City Cou...

BIGFOOT, Texas >> The worst oil bust since the 1980s is putting Texas and other oil producing states on the hook for thousands of newly abandoned drilling sites at a time when they have little money to plug wells and seal off environmental hazards. As U.S. rig counts plunge to historic lows, and with at least 60 oil producers declaring bankruptcy since 2014, energy-producing states are confronting both holes in their budgets and potentially leaking ones in the ground. In Texas alone, the roughly $165 million price tag of plugging nearly 10,000 abandoned wells is double the entire budget of the agency that regulates the industry. The problem is forcing states to get creative: Texas reg...

Most would agree that one of the pleasures of a holiday is the opportunity to sleep in, especially if you’re a teenager. But Boy Scouts from Troop 188 of Los Alamitos passed up that luxury last week for the sake of both patriotism and entrepreneurship. As their friends snoozed on Memorial Day, the Scouts were up before the sun to start the inaugural task of Flags All Year — a paid service that displays Old Glory on front lawns six times a year. “I thought this program would be for the older military guy who isn’t able to put up his own flag,” said Eagle Scout and dad Billy Howard, who came up with the idea. “But people of all ages have shown interest.” For $55 aually, the troop will place a...
