A group of students at Rim of the World High School in Lake Arrowhead have created a stir for displaying Confederate flags, staked into the beds of their pickup trucks, in the school parking lot. On Friday, two Ford pickups, parked side-by-side, sat parked in the school parking lot, one Confederate flag and one American flag displayed in the bed of each truck. Adding to an already lengthy statewide general election ballot, the City Council on Tuesday voted to add a tax measure that City Clerk Maria de la Luz Garcia said would help fund public safety, police officers, emergency response, homelessness and general city services should voters pass ballot measures proposed at the local and state level. The school’s incoming class of high school freshmen will study on the former grounds of New City Public Schools, a charter school that lost its ability to operate. NEW YORK — The Standard and Poor’s 500 index closed at a record high Monday, beating the mark it set a bit over a year ago. The Dow Jones industrial average was within 1 percent of its own closing high, which was also set in May last year, but the Nasdaq composite has further to go. A 4-year-old girl suffered a critical injury after being struck by a hit-and-run driver Thursday evening near an intersection east of Long Beach Poly. Police responded about 8:30 p.m. to a report of an injury traffic collision near the intersection of 17th Street and Alamitos Avenue, Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman Marlene Arrona said in an email. Officers arrived to find a child had been hit by a vehicle, the driver of which failed to remain at the scene of the crash. A caper 50 years in the making came to a close this week in the Palos Verdes Peninsula High School library. The culprit was Carol Kronberg, a member of the first graduating class at Rolling Hills High School in 1966.
