The number of teenagers finding summer jobs surged in June to a three-year high, according to a new report from outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Employment among teens ages 16 to 19 increased by 691,000, the report said. That was up 13 percent from the 609,000 teen jobs that were added in June of 2015, and it was the biggest boost for that month since 779,000 teens secured summer work in June 2013. Teen hiring for May and June — the first two months of the three-month summer hiring period — outpaced hiring for the same period last year. ISTANBUL >> Authorities say fighting between Turkish forces and Kurdish rebels in the restive southeast of the country has killed eight Turkish soldiers and 35 Kurdish fighters. The office of Turkey’s General Staff headquarters said Saturday the eight soldiers were killed in a clash Friday afteoon with Kurdish militants at a checkpoint in the southeaste Hakkari province. Califoia employers added 40,300 jobs in June and the Golden State led the nation in year-over-year growth with 461,100 jobs added, the state Employment Development Department reported Friday. Last month’s increase was more than double the amount of jobs added the previous month and Califoia’s aual employment gain outpaced Florida, which ranked second with 244,500 jobs added, and Texas, which added 171,100. Califoia’s unemployment rate ticked up to 5.4 percent in June from 5.2 percent in May but it still landed well below the year-ago rate of 6.2 percent. WASHINGTON — Employers shook off two months of weak hiring by adding 287,000 jobs in June, a robust pace that suggests a resilient U.S. economy recovering from a slump early in the year. Lawyers for the city of Los Angeles say attoeys representing a former training officer for ex-LAPD Officer Christopher Doer aren’t entitled to view all of the investigative reports and persoel records involving the late rogue officer and want a judge to impose limits on what is released. Doer killed himself in a 2013 standoff with police in San Beardino County. Sgt. Teresa Evans alleges in a lawsuit filed last October that she is being made a scapegoat because of the racial cootations attached to Doer’s claims before he died. Evans is White and Doer was black.
